Every firm has an origin story. Ours begins with a man who refused to let knowledge sit still.

This month, as we mark our Founder’s Day and the posthumous birthday of our founder, Professor Julius Onuora Onah, Manmark Associates Limited pauses to celebrate a life whose ideas still shape how we work, who we hire, and why we exist.

A colossus of marketing

Prof. Onah was not simply an academic who happened to build a business. He was an intellectual trailblazer whose vision and philosophy birthed this establishment — and whose thinking remains the pillar behind our success as one of Nigeria’s leading market-driven enterprises.

His firsts speak for themselves:

• The first Professor of Marketing in West Africa.
• The first alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to be made a professor by the same university.
• The pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).
• Author of fifteen authoritative books and a management consultant of global repute.

But titles were never the point. What made him extraordinary was what he did with them.

“Gown to Town”: a philosophy, not a slogan

Prof. Onah was an academic with a difference. He redefined the intersection of academic theory and corporate practice, and he did it deliberately.

Long before “industry-academia collaboration” became a conference talking point, he championed a pedagogy that required students to engage the marketplace directly. Through his linkage programme, students were expected to solve real corporate and SME challenges before they graduated. Theory was tested where it mattered — in the field, against real customers, in real market conditions.

That is what “Gown to Town” meant. Knowledge was never meant to remain in the lecture hall.

Giving Nigeria’s small businesses a definition

Prof. Onah’s scholarship also did something quietly foundational: his research provided explicit parameters for defining Small and Medium Scale Industries (SMSIs) — grounded in localised economic metrics, capital structures and labour capacities, rather than borrowed foreign benchmarks.

It is difficult to support small businesses you cannot properly define. His work gave policymakers and practitioners a framework rooted in Nigerian realities — a contribution that still underpins how MSME policy is framed today.

A legacy you can walk into

Some legacies live only in memory. His lives in brick, and in practice.

The Prof. Julius Onah Auditorium at ESUT remains a working nexus — a venue where national tech festivals, youth entrepreneurship summits and SME development initiatives converge. The building keeps doing what the man did: bringing gown and town into the same room.

And within Manmark, his legacy is a culture. He established an organisation rooted in uncompromising integrity, academic precision and empowering mentorship — the three standards we still measure every engagement against.

Carrying the torch forward

Under the leadership of our Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Adaonah Kene-Uyanwune, Manmark Associates has entered a transformative era — one built on rigorous corporate governance, strategic institutional alliances, and advanced business process re-engineering.
